Polk City FL
February 2004
The weather was unpredictable. One day....mid 40's, and next day high 70's. But who's complaining! Downtown Lakeland is an antiquer's dream. Lots of parks with lakes, art galleries and (our favorite) coffee houses.
We visited Apollo Beach where the manatees
winter in the warm waters of a local power
plant. They also displayed a large variety of local flowers in theme gardens.
Historic Bok Sanctuary in Lake Wales, Florida
is a sight to behold. A 205-foot tower surrounded
by acres of peaceful gardens and meandering paths filled with natural flora, plants and trees native to Florida.
We spent a wonderful day at Anna Marie Island (near Sarasota) with Jon and Ann Ericson (friends from Connecticut).
On the road again.......we left Florida on Feb 20th and headed west. We arrived in Pass Christain, Mississippi on Saturday realizing it's Mardi Gras in New Orleans (only 60 miles away). We watched a local parade in town and decided it was fate so we drove into New Orleans and tasted the flavor (seafood gumbo and costumes) of the festival. We collected tons of beads without embarrassing ourselves.

We made plans with our daughter to be in Galveston Island by February 28 to celebrate our birthdays. (Jennifer's and Diana's) We stayed overnight at Gulf Coast RV Resort in Beaumont, Texas.
An outstanding campground located close to I-10 and serving a continental breakfast each morning. A two-hour ride brought us to our "home park" Escapees RV Park in Livingston, Texas. (Members can dry-camp up to two weeks. We picked up our mail and also got our car inspected in town. (cost $12.50)
We arrived at Galveston Island State Park about 2:00 pm on Thursday. The temps are in the low 60's but the wind makes it feel much cooler. Our campsite for the next 11 days is right near the beach and we're looking forward to some rest and relaxation.
