Mission San Juan Capistrano was established on Nov 1, 1776 by Father Juniper Serra. It's nearly 1,000 native American Indians believed to be of Shosone decent worked the various farming, herding, candle & soap making, iron smelting, weaving and tanning operations which let to the mission's success. The grounds include the South and West Wing Museum Rooms, Soldier's Barracks, the Central Gardens, the Secret Garden, St. Francis Garden, the Bell Wall, the Basilica, Serra Chapel and the Great Stone Church. It is home to the famous returning swallows who arrive each March and depart in October. Unfortunately, we missed seeing them by one day.
While visiting the mission, a local school performed skits celebrating United Nations Day! Represented here are:
L to R, India, Egypt, and Italy.
