We visited the Tuzigoot National Monument in Cottonwood, AZ. It's an ancient village built by the Sinagua Indians around AD 1000, consisting of 2 and 3-story pueblos and when completed numbered 110.
The Sinagua were agriculturalists and traders. Spaniards and other tribes came from hundreds of miles away to barter with
the Sinagua. They farmed the land for four hundred years and abruptly vanished, perhaps due to di-
sease or lack of water.

The town of Jerome, with a history in silver mining, is located less than 10 miles from Cottonwood. It's situated on the mountainside at an elevation of over 5,000'. It's an eclectic town filled with art galleries, cafes, specialty shops, and the "Asylum", a restuarant perched high on the mountain converted from an old hospital. If you're ever in the area, this town is not to be missed.
