NM and AZ-March 2004
Highlights of March, 2004
A new month found us enjoying the coastline of Galveston Island, Texas. The wind was brisk everyday, but the sun was very pleasant. Walks on the beach, collecting treasures of the sea (shelling) are always a welcome activity for us. We visited with our daughter, Jennifer and her husband David who reside in Friendswood, a 45 min. ride north of the island. Diana's sister, Gay, who lives in Big Sandy, Texas also paid us a visit while house-sitting for friends at Port Bolivar. Gay, is a published writer under the name Gabrielle Giguere (Till Death Do Us Part, Tracks In The Sand). It was wonderful spending time with family again.

David introduced us to an authentic
Mexican restuarant, "The Original
Mexican Restuarant" which we highly
recommend.
Our next stay was at "The Ranch" in Congress, AZ which is another Escapees park. They have the most wonderful desert park which they named Saguaro Park, displaying hundreds of local cactus and plants in an enjoyable setting. It's lovingly maintained by volunteers and the highlight is a huge saguaro cactus named Goliath dating back to the 1600's.
As we traveled west we stayed at
"North Ranch" in Lakewood, NM
which is just north of Carlsbad Caverns. It's an Escapees Park where
we were welcomed with friendly smiles and hugs. We spent two days exploring the Caverns and were in
awe of the breathtaking displays
of the rock formations.
We attended the International FMCA
rally in Albuquerque, NM. Hightlights were the hot-air balloons, The Gatlin Brothers, John Davidson, and a Chuck Wagon supper complete with a Mariachi band and cowboy songs. We drove the Turquoise Trail which ran from Albequerque to Santa Fe, experiencing authentic western mining towns along the way. The tramway ride up the Sandia Mountain Peak, 10,378 feet above sea-level, was an amazing sight. On the peak they were sking and snowboarding but the temperture was a pleasant 45-50 degrees. A visit to the ancient petroglyphs at Boca Negra Canyon and Rinconada Canyon brought us back in time over 2,000-3,000 years. These are pictures of various human, animal and insect images as well as geometric designs etched into the rocks' thin desert varnish which revealed a lighter gray and left a lasting mark.
