Oct 2004 #3
October, 2004 (continued)
Our destination in New Mexico was Hidden Valley Ranch. A campground nestled in the high desert along the foothills of Cookes Range, this former working ranch is 7,000 acres of open range surrounded by endless sky. It's located about 12 miles north of historic Deming (chili capital of the world). Our adventure started with a challenging ride down a bumpy gravel road (8 miles) surrounded by open range cattle and ended with a warm friendly welcome from the resort staff. We spent two days hiking in the tranquil foothills only to discover ancient petroglyphs carved into the stone formations near a deserted native campsite. With so many sights in the area, (Silver City, Gila Cliff Dwellings, and three major state parks) we knew our time spent there was too short and we agreed to return someday.
